Carsten Schneider is associate professor in political science at Central European University,
Hungary, and founding director of the Center for the Study of Imperfections in Democracies
(DISC). Part of his research focuses on political regime transitions and qualities of
democracies. His book 'The Consolidation of Democracy in Europe and Latin America'
(Routledge, 2008) has been published with Routledge. His co- authored textbook 'Set-
Theoretic Methods for the Social Sciences: A Guide for Qualitative Comparative Analysis'
has just been published with Cambridge University Press. Schneider has published in
Comparative Sociology, Democratization, European Journal of Political Research, Journal of
Politics, Political Research Quarterly, and other journals. His current project assesses the
impact of socioeconomic inequalities in different market economies on qualities of
democracies. Schneider is member of the Young Academy of Science in Germany and he was
a Kennedy fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University for the academic
year 2009–2010.
